Pre-defefence by Tobias Boelt Back

Title of thesis: "Resemiotising boundary affects through time and space: On the social achievement of constituting mutual intelligibility of action-relevant objects"

20.09.2019 kl. 13.00 - 15.00

The main topic of my dissertation is resemiotisation. I study the co-creation of work-relevant objects at the editorial office of a Danish televised talk show. My main objective is to explore the professional, social practices that go into cultivating specific inter-affective possibilities of objects. I am especially interested in seeing how the sequential outcome of a future interaction is sequentially and materially structured through a series of consecutive work-relevant activities.

Firstly, my study shows how the editorial task of planning and structuring a potential future interaction depends on the staff’s ability to continuously reify objects with certain action-relevant properties aimed to help manage and restrict variety in the later live ‘talk show’ talk.

Secondly, it shows how the constitutive practices of reification is closely related to an on-going process of resemiotising action-relevant objects across sites and modalities. To uncover the multi-semiotic entanglements of the editorial work, I employ ethnomethodological conversation analysis with a strong focus on embodiment and materiality.
